All Aboard, All Included: Metro-North Getaways In Hudson Valley, CT

Between commuter traffic and parking limitations, planning a visit to the Bruce Museum may seem daunting to some, yet the Greenwich-based museum and the Metro-North Railroad are working together to make the trip more convenient and accessible to all.

The museum and Metro-North offer a “Getaway” package that includes discounted rates for both train tickets and admission to the Bruce Museum from any station on the Metro-North Railroad. Both are combined on one ticket and purchased easily at a MetroNorth kiosk or ticket office.

“We want people to take the train instead of their car for leisure travel. This isn’t just for commuters, this is for everybody,” says Kamala Sibaran-Browne, Manager of Promotional Partnerships for MTA Metro-North Railroad.

The Getaway program increases accessibility to tourism hotspots in Connecticut, Hudson Valley, and beyond. Other included attractions: Norwalk, Conn.'s Maritime Aquarium, Westchester Children's Museum in Rye, N.Y., the Hudson River Museum  and Empire City Casino in Yonkers, N.Y., and the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, among others.

“This program works for people who do not have cars or do not want to drive to an attraction,” says Sibaran-Browne. “It is a nice way for them to come to those places without having to worry about parking, traffic or lost time."

Kathleen Durand, a Fine Arts teacher at Trumbull High School in Trumbull, Conn., is planning a trip to the Bruce this spring with students in her AP studio art class. “My students are taking the train because of the traffic, and I didn’t want to use a large school bus for such a small group, which is what we usually take.”

Durand doesn’t claim that taking the train to the Museum necessarily enhances the experience of the actual field trip, but she admits to enjoying a train ride.

“Personally, I love trains, and if I can travel by train rather than bus for a school trip, I’m ‘all aboard’!”
